Romans 8:29 “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be CONFORMED to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”
When God made man, the intent in the heart of God was for man be like God and for man to grow in the likeness of God. Man just like God was tripartite, he is a spirit, that has a soul and lives in a earthly suit called the body. Hence, with this body, he can live on the earth and interact with all that’s on the earth. His body houses his soul, which is the sit of emotions, intellect, memory, imagination and will, through which he makes decisions and reacts rightly or wrongly to happenings on the earth, and this also helps him make judgement between what is assumed good and what is perceived as evil. His rationality depends on expansive usage of his soul, how much he has fellowship with good or evil. His spirit however is the power house with which he interacts with his maker and the spiritual world were he belongs. Don’t be deceived, all things are spiritual. All things do not just have spiritual roots, they are actually spiritual.
But the true intent of God for man was for man to become exactly like God, like Jesus Christ was described as “the brightness of His Glory, and the express image of His person”, that’s exactly what man was designed to become until the fall. The fall of man further destroyed the real existence of man. Man who was a living soul became a carnal being. To be carnal means to be dead in your spirit, hence, such man is separated from living from, and by the spirit. Such man will be reduced to living from the soul, and living under the subjection of animalistic instincts and tendencies. So, we will understand proper when scripture says, “to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Romans 8:6.
Man died. Man really died. To be dead is to be separated from life. When man died, he stopped living in the consciousness of the spirit where he truly belongs. He is now limited to the realms of soul where his memory, will, emotions, intellect and imagination play supreme rather than total dependence on God. And in the true state of creation, that’s death, as sign of separation from God.
Now, what Jesus came to do is to bring us back to the original intent of God for man, to wit, reconciling us back to God and bringing us right back into the divine purpose of creation of man. That man should become like God, and that man will radiate the Glory of God here on earth. So, the ultimate destiny of man is to be conformed to the image of the son of God. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23. This means that man fell into sin and couldn’t show forth the glory of God any longer. Man has fallen below the glorious standard of God image and likeness, and the more separated we are from God, the more the decline and depletion.
Rather than conformity to God, man has become conformed to witty inventions of death. Man has become conformed to worldly lust and worldly lifestyles. Yet, the scripture instructs us “not to be conformed to this world but tk be transformed by the renewing of our minds.” Romans 12:2. Real transformation is becoming like God by looking at the image of Jesus Christ, through which we become like the image of the son of God. “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18.
That’s how we conform to God’s original purpose design for man. To come into glory by changing from just a living soul into a quickening spirit. Our utmost destiny is to be conformed to the image of God and to live in His likeness.
