Good morning, sorry I missed the devotional last week, the Sunday before was my birthday and I was very busy with greetings that I became very worn out and my phone also was really used up. Thanks to all who sent their greetings.
Today, I like to share five (5) scriptures with us about the fear of the Lord as recorded in the book of Proverbs in the Bible. I’m very certain, if you read with your minds open and your heart receptive, you will be blessed. Let me say this before we begin, the word “FEAR” here doesn’t imply an ungodly fright caused by uncertainty that causes one to panic and be afraid but a holy reverence that inspires one’s heart to learning.
1. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of (foundation for) knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7.
The fear of the Lord is the bedrock upon which knowledge is being acquired and developed. No one can successfully build himself/herself in true knowledge without the fear of the Lord. Before a house can be built, the foundation must be laid and it must be solid enough to carry the house, such is the fear of the Lord. It is the foundation for all manners of knowledge. God encompasses all knowledge because He is the Omniscient God (All Knowing God).
2. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the Lord will lead you to despise certain ills of life. Remember the first scripture considered relates to knowledge and one thing we know about all who acquires knowledge without making the fear of the Lord their foundation, become puffed up. But the fear of the Lord, as foundation for all learning helps us to hate evil. Anything that is not rooted in God, inspired by Love, and or done in humility is evil. To explain further the evil, the scripture highlights pride and arrogance, evil ways and forward mouth. True fear of the Lord doesn’t permit pride and arrogance, they are destructive to building a quality life rooted and grounded in God.
3. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10.
Wisdom is the right application of knowledge at the right time to achieve the best possible result in life. One cannot prosper in life without wisdom. Wisdom, the scripture says is the principal thing. It means, it is very important for us to have wisdom, and not just any wisdom but the wisdom from and of God. The world has its own wisdom which is worldly craft and this always would come to nought. What we must seek is the wisdom of or from God and without the fear of the Lord, we cannot truly come into such wisdom. It is the fear of the Lord that empowers us into wisdom.
4. The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. Proverbs 10:27.
It is very necessary and important for us to note this scripture. If you want your days to be prolonged here on earth, you should have the fear of the Lord. God had promised us of long life but this cannot come except we have the fear of the Lord. Without the fear of the Lord, we cannot apply discretion that would stop us from doing things that will hurt us. Pride and arrogance are great killers for pride comes before a fall and with the fear of the Lord in our lives, pride will be dealt with, hence, we will live in absolute safety. Scripture says, honour your father and mother, and you shall have long life. Only in and by the fear of God can such a life be lived.
5. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27.
And lastly, the fear of the Lord is the wellspring/source/fountain of life. What this means is that in the fear of the Lord, life is generated. If you want to live in the fulness of life, you must live by and in the fear of the Lord. And it also goes further to say, the fear of the Lord teaches us to depart from things that will ensnare us to death. Departing from ways of destruction cannot be done outside of the fear of the Lord. An average human being loves to explore things that will eventually destroy him since he cannot naturally choose that which is good but evil. Any man outside God is under the dominion of sin and death, hence, cannot live outside that domain. But a man with the fear of God runs away from things that can destroy his life. The fear of the Lord inspires us to life, but its absence allows death and corruption to work in us.
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13. Never forget that the sumation of life is that we fear God and in doing that we must keep His commandments. Therefore, the fear of the Lord is our ability and resolve to keep his commandments. That’s the whole duty/responsibility of man here on earth. Anything short of that is vanity up on vanity. God bless you.
