Genesis 12:1 KJV
Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Many of us have read and can even talk about this story of God calling Abraham out of his household with God promising to make him the father of many nations, and how he obeyed in faith and left, and at the end he became great. That’s one sweet story many of us can tell although with mixed feelings, some believing it’s possible and some just say it to reiterate what he/she has learnt, heard or read at one point or the other.

I like how the Bible started the account by saying, “The Lord had said to Abram….” From our understanding of the English language, one would note that the statement showed that the commandment had been issued in the past, other things had happen before the action was executed. But the good news is, Abram obeyed in faith by taking a step into the unknown.

Many times, God calls us but we hesitate. We are not quick to respond to him. That’s not a problem, however, we are expected to get to a point where our response to his demands becomes instantaneous. The more we allow things to delay our obedience, the more difficult it may become for us to eventually obey. Abram started out the journey being hesitant of his end, but he ended up taking the step.

Why the hesitation?
It was a strange call. It is very strange for someone to be called out of his family, his kindred, and all he has grown up to know into something he has never interfaced with. There is no prior knowledge of such adventure of faith, so explains the delay in outright obedience. The instruction was to leave all to be shown something. The worldly common sense would say, “a bird in hand is worth two in the bush”, which means what you already possess is better than what you have not possessed. God calls him out of the obvious into so called oblivion. God called him out of the known in the unknown. That’s strange, so he hesitated.

Many times, when God calls, He calls us out of the things we are used to into something totally strange to us. He calls us out of darkness into light. We are used to darkness. Darkness was our main instructor in the past and now God’s calling us into a strange and unknown territory called light, as such we hesitate. The end is great for us only if we can obey. When God calls, it is to call us into a higher and better promises. Many of us are used to what we are used to, and because of it, we lose out on what He’s calling us into. “who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” 1 Peter 2:9. And as he has called us, He expects us to walk thus. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:” Ephesians 5:8. The more we delay, the more we allow darkness to reign over our lives.

When God calls, He calls us out of death into life. Death is a whole system of living that has successfully cultured men in a way. Its main instrument of control is sin. But here comes God calling us out of Sin that leads to death into righteousness that leads to life. This may be strange to us but we must yield ourselves to the call. Sin and death is destructive to our life, righteousness and life reconstruct our life. “And you hath he quickened , who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:” Ephesians 2:1-2

When God calls, He calls us out of our self into Himself. He calls us out of our ways into His way. “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits. There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 16:2, 25. When God calls, He wants to call us out of self destruction into Himself so He can build us up. We are used to our ways, they look good in our own eyes but they are full of thorns and bristles. So many pitfalls on our ways, but we must allow God direct us. We must desist from following our ways unto following His way. “Jesus said, I am the WAY, I am the TRUTH, I am the LIFE….” And so, scriptures admonish us to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5.

When God calls, He attempts to call us out of our foolishness into His own wisdom. The highest level of foolishness is to assume that one’s life can be better run without God’s involvement. And no matter the height of the wisdom of man, it is the lowest point of God’s foolishness (that’s if he has). And man has been trained to live life by himself denying the existence of God, and the eventual involvement of God in the administration of his life. “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;” Romans 1:28. It is foolishness to leave out God in your life. So, God is calling us out this alien life, that is without God and without hope into wisdom driven by God.

When God calls, He calls us out of hopelessness into Hope. Man living outside God is man living outside hope. There is one hope and the one hope is in God, “Christ in us, the hope of glory.” A man without God is a man without hope. When God calls, He is calling us into Hope. Not just hope in this world,  but also into everlasting hope. All that man labours for in this world is hopelessness in the assumption of hope. Scriptures says, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” 1 Corinthians 15:19. There is a better, bigger, most assured hope, it is what God is calling us into.

When God calls, He calls us out of hate into love. The world cannot define to us what love actually is because God is love and to define love, you must define God. That’s why the defining boundary of love is shifting because man is looking for love. Man has left love as defined between one man and one woman to having extra marital affairs. And that seems to be limiting, man has chosen to love animals as their spouse yet not satisfied. Now, man loves man, woman wants to sleep with fellow woman, and this is called love. Never, that’s not love. That’s the hate program playing out. Eventually, their souls are tutored to hate God and all that He has made. God is calling us out of these hate program into His divine love. “For God so love the world His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” That’s God’s love. Love to save and not to destroy. Love to build and not to destroy. Love to preserve and not to perish. That’s what He’s calling us into when He calls.

When God calls, He is calling us into a life of joy, peace, grace, happiness, and so on. It might not look like it from the outset, but if we learn to obey, we will see at the end that He has called us into a life much more beautiful than we may ever conceive. It’s time to obey and not hesitate any longer. When He calls, He is faithful and just to bring to pass what He has promised. So, today, when you hear His voice, harden not your heart…. yield diligently to His voice and He will reward you for you diligence in obedience.

When He calls, it’s not if h He calls. He is calling you. Just answer Him and obey His every instructions. He will guide you through. Amen. God bless you.
