1 Timothy 6:11 KJV
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
In furtherance of our thoughts on flee from, follow after and fight the good fight of faith, we proceed to the second phenomenon we were admonished to follow after. Please do not forget that we are not meant to follow in isolation but to holistically follow after them, not also individually but as a collection.
Follow after Godliness…
It is very interesting to see that after righteousness, the next thing to follow after is godliness, which is being in the form of God or in a more simpler term, having God-like character. Remember we said being righteous is aligning to God’s instructions and there’s no how you can align yourself to the mind of God without being Godly.
The requirements for being Godly is not to become spooky or unnecessarily pious, but it’s a state of being that exhibits godly virtues. Being godly is not being pretentious or being religious, it is living as the Lord would permit you to live as if you were right in the presence of God. What we do both in the open and in the secret sum up to define whether or not we live godly.
The honest question to ask is if you were to be in the presence of God and you must do something, will what you are about to do make him happy or not. Unconsciously and consciously, that is how should live, having God in focus in our actions.
A Godly man is one driven by divine counsel. He walks in tandem with heaven’s direction and instructions. He is soaked up in God that everything he does is occasioned by God Himself. He cannot of himself do anything except the Father instructs him to do. He is like the son, Jesus, who lived in total dependence on the Father.
If we must fight the good fight of faith, we must be godly. Jesus paints this picture when he said “a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand….” If you live is subjection and submission to sin, you cannot fight against sinfulness and corruption of this world. To be empowered to fight against the devil and his vices, we must choose to live like God, arming ourselves with righteousness and godly character.
Romans 6:16 KJV
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
This question answers it all. If you are servant to sin, death is the reward. You cannot stand against sin if you are subservient to it, then you cannot be free from the clutches of death. On the other hand, if you are obedient to righteousness and carry out it’s instructions, then you are free from the hold of death, only then can you fight the good fight of faith.
We need to be empowered to stand till the end fighting the good fight of faith. If you do not flee from lust, you will fall to death. And if you flee from lust but do not follow after righteousness, godliness… you will faint in the journey. But to be emboldened to fight the good fight, flee from lust and then follow after. God bless you.
