2 Peter 1:2 “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,”
Many times in the epistle, they start by pronouncing the Grace and Peace of God upon the people and one would think this is just the natural way of saying, ‘I wish you well or may you have a blessed day’, but this is much more bigger than that.
Grace is an heavenly resource that empowers us to live above the hold of sin and death. Grace is the divine ability of God working in us to live a godly life. And Peace is God’s resource that helps us to live a life of absolute safety. One who has the peace of God is one who above all that is happening around him, finds comfort within. He is not troubled neither is he afraid of the terrors of the day or the night because he dwells in absolute safety.
So, when the prayer is said, Grace and Peace be multiplied to you, it is an adaptation of the way God told Moses to teach Aaron on how to bless the children of Israel. Saying, “The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” Numbers 6:24-26.
Do we see that model of God’s blessing for His people? Grace and Peace. When grace is ministered to you, it is the face of God shining upon you to bless you and to keep you. And when Peace is ministered to you, it is the Lord lifting His countenance upon you, to bless you and to keep you.
The word “Bless” means to alter one’s life from a life of nothingness unto a meaningful life. It means to change the course of one’s life from perishing to life being added to life. To bless is to stop the activity of death and to give life in abundance. And then the other part is “to keep you” which means to preserve you from corruption. And that’s why “God gave his begotten son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life.” And Jesus said, I have come that you should have life and to have it in abundance.
The essence of Grace and Peace being multiplied unto us is for God’s blessing and preservation. And how can grace and peace be multiplied? It is by the knowledge of the Lord. As we grow in the Knowledge of God, we grow in Grace and Peace. Grace and peace is not externally generated. No. It is divinely acquired. As we learn more of God, we grow in Grace and as we submit ourselves to Him, we have peace.
Two scriptures that teaches us these are stated below:
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
Are we seeing these? It takes humility to learn of God, and by this God pours His grace on us. The proud will never learn. And also until we learn to submit to God, we may never be able to resist the devil.
And the end of the pronouncement of God’s blessing upon the people is that the people may bear the name of the Lord. If Grace and Peace is not multiplied upon you through the knowledge of the Lord, you cannot bear His name. It takes Grace and Peace. That’s what God has called you to do, bear His name. And the essence of all these is such that you will be sealed by the name of the Lord. And you will forever live a blessed life. Be a carrier of His presence. Grace and Peace be multiplied to you. God bless you. Amen.
