Ecclesiastes 12:8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness,….
I find myself reading the testimonies of these three persons as they were about leaving this world and I find it intriguing to see something amazing.
Solomon used all His life (spirit, soul and body) to explore vanity. He wanted to enjoy life to the fullest. He wanted to live a life full of fun. Whatsoever was good to the eyes, he went for. Whatever his life soul desired, he did not keep away from his life. He even went as far as exploring worshipping other gods as his heart was drawn away to dumb idols. And having done all these explorations, he ended up in a bitter sorry state lamenting the nature of all he had sought, “Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.”
Jesus who addressed Himself as his “a greater than Solomon” had a very different testimony. He did not use His life to pursue vanity. He was also tempted with these desires for vanity yet He chose to live according to the volume of books which was written concerning Him by the Father.
There is always an appeal to our Spirit, soul and body to chase after vanity since scriptures record that “The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.” Ps. 94:11. The devil usually bombards our heart, mind, and body with thoughts of vanity and it’s always attractive and appealing but it will end us in sorrow and lamentations. Imagine using all your life to pursue nothing, at your death bed, what will you say?
Another person that showed us a pattern we also must follow is Apostle Paul. He used all his energy to pursue the preaching of the gospel. He spent all he ever earned and had to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. He wanted nothing but to “attain unto the resurrection of the dead.” Phil. 3:11.
What kind of testimony do we want to have afterwards? What are we expending our energies on? What do we seek with all our lives? See what the Preacher, Solomon concluded. ” Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
Use your time here on earth rightly. Seek the kingdom of God. Set your mind on the things above where Christ is seated. Store up your treasures in heaven where there is no moth or cankerworm, where there is no thieves. That’s safety guaranteed. God bless you.
