Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
Here, we see the personality of the father giving instructions to the son and somehow He is pleading with the son. It’s now left for the son to obey the instructions of the father. Only one son fits for our model, that’s Jesus Christ, whom He has appointed heir of all things, since He is the brightness of His glory and the express representation of His image. He obeyed the Father to the end.
Let’s see how Jesus was enticed. Immediately after the declaration of His sonship, Jesus was led straight away to the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Tempted here means ‘to prove’ Jesus’ sonship, whether or not He will obey the Father’s instruction. Three times Jesus was proven, and He didn’t consent to the enticement. He remained loyal and faithful to the Father’s instruction.
At Gathsemane, He was given an option to either continue on the mission or to decline, He considered the options and mentioned it to God in request, but He remembering the Father’s will, went ahead to nullify His earlier plea of escaping death and said, “nonetheless, your Will be done.”
The Father’s instruction is a product of His will. The Will of the Father contains His instruction, therefore, in seeking to fulfill the will of the Father, you must pay quality attention to the instructions of the Father. If you fail in obeying the instructions of the Father, you may never fulfill the will of the Father.
To be enticed means to be deceived, to be lured out of the way. Remember, the will of the Father designs the way. Therefore, if one is enticed, it means you have been deceived out of the way of the Lord. To be deceived out of way means to be led out of the will of the Father.
The scriptures show us that the determining factor is not whether you are enticed or not, it’s whether you consent or not. To consent means to agree. Many of us have agreed with the enticement of the sinners. Many of us have sought the ways of sin. Many have consented to following the ways of the world. Once it’s acceptable by a vast majority, it’s ok. But we have forgotten that ‘the ways of man are good in his own sight’.
The Father is entrusting us with His will, but we must follow and fulfill it according to His instructions. He is therefore looking up to us to see if we will consent to the enticement of sinner or the world. Jesus was bold to declare, “…for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.” Jh.14:30.
Matthew 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Always remember, we are not under the dominion of sin, so, we cannot claim to be helpless and hopeless. Sin is not the problem, since the solution to sin has been provided. The major problem has been we loving sin, and not accepting to walk in the light. Just as light is the solution to darkness, yet some prefer to stay in the dark. Our consent is very important.
Paul describes consent as yielding…. To yield means to agree. Therefore, scripture says, Romans 6:19 “… for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”
What will you yield your members to? Will you consent to the enticement of the world?
