Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
The fear of the Lord is very important for living. Many have the fear of punishment, guilt, condemnation and hell rather than the fear of the Lord. The difference is, other kinds of fears are bounds that binds people to death, but the fear of the Lord drives man to life and peace.
The word fear as used here does not mean being afraid of someone or being unnecessarily careful. Fear means reverence, to honour someone out of unconditional love for that person. Therefore, the fear of Lord relates to honouring God with all our lives.
The fear of the Lord is built upon the knowledge of the Lord. No man can have awe for the Lord except he has a revealed knowledge of God. And that’s why in the arrangement of the seven Spirit of the Lord, we see;
The Spirit of the Lord: the connecting Spirit,
The Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding,
The Spirit of Counsel and Might,
The Spirit of Knowledge and of the Fear of the Lord.
As a believer, we need to desire the inward filling of the Holy Ghost. The is a general baptism of the Holy Ghost which all born again believers are entitled to. All you need is to desire it, pray for it, trust God for it, and you’ll have it.
Afterwards, as you keep walking with God and learning His ways, you’ll begin to come into the next level, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding. It’s the first pair Spirit. Then comes the Spirit of counsel and moght which is the next pair Spirit. The last pair is the Spirit of the knowledge of the Lord and of the fear of the Lord.
The knowledge of the Lord does not relate to facts or information about God, but deeper fellowship and relationship with God such that you begin to have high level of intimate relationship with Him. The word knowledge as used here also relate to having a sexual or intimate relationship with someone. Hence, to have the Spirit of the Knowledge of the Lord is to come into higher and deeper relationship with Yahweh.
No man gets to this stage without automatically having the fear of the Lord. This fear is built around intimate unconditional love. You just want to honour the one you love. You just want to do all He requires of you. All the desire of your heart is to be pleasing unto the one you love.
At this level, no man will force you to do anything, all your desirw would be to please Him. Religion binds people in fear of condemnation, guilt, punishment and hell, but God is calling us to a fear built around intimate unconditional love in relationship with Him.
That’s all Jesus Christ came to restore, the lost relationship between God and man. Adam was always eager to enjoy God’s fellowship at the cool of the day. Moses had a deeper relationship with God, he knew His ways while others knew His acts. Moses could climb to the mount to chat with God, hear God speak to him, the people didn’t want that. They are just interested in what God can do.
That’s what you see in religion where people just want to know God for what He can do, not to have a relationship with Him. So, they end up as being fearful since they see Him as one that is distant and fearsome. But in relating with Him rightly, they would have known Him better.
The Fear of the Lord begins with attaining wisdom, and it is finalized by attaining the Knowledge of the Lord. Seek a relationship with God today built on an intimate unconditional love. God bless you.
