Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
The blessedness of a man is not defined in what he has but what he does. A man is not blessed because of what he possesses, but what he does and who he is.
In describing the blessed man, the Psalmist relates three major activities of the human being. To be either blessed or nor, one must fulfil these three life’s activity.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Our walk is very important. The way we also walk is equally important. We have been called to a walk with God, it’s called the Faith Walk. Enoch walked with God, Abraham walked with God and many others walked with God.
To walk means to establish a bilateral relationship, such that the lesser is following and learning from the higher.
Jesus called twelve people to a walk, who later became the disciples. To walk with Jesus, you must learn His life, His ways and His doctrine (manner of life) such that when anyone see you, they will have no choice but to describe you as A Christian (like Christ).
On the other hand, we were advised not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly. To walk in such counsel means to be in conformity with the life of the ungodly. Counsel means representation.
A blessed man is one that will not establish a relationship that will show him as a representative of the ungodly.
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Our stands is also very important. It shows who we are and what we actually represents. To take a stand means to assume a position, to take a decision based on certain principles.
Scripture shows us that we are to stand in grace by faith, and not in the wisdom of men which is corrupt and evil.
Ways of sinners relate to the very life of sin, the mannerisms and dispositions of sinners. When all we see about you shows the same traits of a sinner, then you need to recheck your life.
A blessed man is one that will not conduct his life in sin, showing the manners and disposition of sinners to life and in life.
Ephesians 6:13-14 “… and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, ….”
Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
To sit means to take a permanent position, to come to a place of rest. One who sits is one who is deemed to have gotten to a place of rest, and chooses to comfort himself there.
Scripture tells us where we ought to sit, in heavenly places with Christ who is also sitting by the right hand of God the Father.
Our place of rest should not be in the seats of th the scornful. Sit of the scornful relates to resting place of the scornful. It also relates to permanent character or attitude of falsehood.
We are to walk in truth, stand for truth and ultimately rest (sit) in truth.
The demand of God on us is such that we will become the truth. Our daily lives will reveal the truth.
Therefore, a blessed man is one that does not find comfort in falsehood.
Having said all these, this is what a blessed man will do: “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Ps. 1:2
A blessed man will always find delight in the Word of God and all his meditation will be on the word of God. It’s a relationship based on love.
In other words, a blessed man is one that will establish a committed relationship with God, take a committed position in God representing God in a well conducted manner, and will find lasting comfort in God.
Therefore, he’ll be like a tree planted by the river whose leave will never wither and produces it’s fruits at regular intervals.
Such is a blessed man. Are you blessed?
