The Image and His Likeness: The Need for Dominion over Sin.
Galatians 1:3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
There is a work that Jesus did that no one else could do. It’s the work of salvation. Before the death and resurrection of Jesus, the people could only cover their sin by offering a sin offering conducted by the High Priest on behalf of himself and then for the people. This could only take them for a period of maximum of one year.
The Law of Moses was also in operation before the coming of Jesus, “for the law was given by Moses, but ‘grace and truth’ came by Jesus Christ.” John 1:17. Jesus didn’t just give us grace and truth, He brought them to us and as many as received Him, He brings into their life the fullness of grace and truth.
The Law was perfect, yet cannot make man perfect. The Law was Holy, yet cannot make man Holy. All that ever existed under the law was made subject to sin and death. They could not overcome the power of sin and death until Jesus Christ manifested Grace and Truth.
On this note, the Apostle Paul ushers us into the deep mysteries of our life in Christ saying, “Grace be to us, and Peace, from God the Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Grace is an endorsement from God showing us a life that is above sin. God chooses to let go of our trespasses and sins, so as to appoint and induce us into the Life that has dominion over sin and death. So, as we go from grace to grace, we grow into perfect dominion over sin and death. Although it’s not automatic, we must know that dominion is a function of ‘being in the image of God, and growing in His likeness.’
When we became born again, we were automatically given a life, the life of God. The new nature. But that nature is blank and can learn and unlearn. Hence, we need to tutor and train that nature in the way of the Lord consistently. Many became born again and decided not to learn of Christ, they unfortunately grew worse than they started. Many gave that new born life the wrong food and teachings, and that stuck with them. Many chose the wrong path and it’ll only take the mercy of God to restore them.
The nature(image) of God given to us at birth is the righteousness of God. See how Paul says it, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;…. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” Rom.1:16,17.
The revelation of the righteousness of God which is the nature of the new birth is from Faith to Faith. As we grow into one level of Faith, we must endeavour to grow into another higher level of Faith. And this we know that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom.10:17.
As a new born babe, we need to desire the sincere milk of the word of God, that we may grow thereby. Our growing into His likeness is very important. We will not have the desired dominion if we do not grow. We will have limited selective dominion over sin if we refuse to grow.
The man of dominion is one that has attained the level of ‘the perfect man’, that is ‘one that has attained the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.’ Remember the description of Christ, “and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” Jh.1:14.
To have dominion therefore is to be FULL of Grace and Truth. So, in communicating the instrument of growth to us, being the Epistle, it’s important that Grace and Peace be first communicated to us and it being multiplied in us by the knowledge of the word of God.
Don’t just remain the image of God, grow into His likeness. We have been predestined to be conformed to the image of the Son of God, and that’s our destiny, but also we with an open face behold Him through a glass(the word of God which reflects His image and shows us His likeness) the glory of God, so that we will be changed into the same perfect image(likeness) from glory to glory.
This is the summary of our quest in life, “to attain the stature of the Son, who is the brightness of God’s glory(likeness), and the express image of God’s person.”
Keep pursuing. Keep growing in the faith. God bless you.
