2 Cor. 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
Salvation is an all round success, a full package of all round blessing. The Lord wants us to have all round success. One of the challenges we’ve had is how do we define success. Success is not the same as having all the wealth of the world or accumulation of wealth. To be successful means ‘to end well’ or ‘to end as planned’. Wealth could form a part of success but it doesn’t define success itself.
Abound in Faith
God wants us to grow in the faith. He desires that we just not remain at the base stage of the faith, but to keep walking in the Faith and to grow thereby. The faith of the children is very different from the faith exercised by the matured son. The best of the children’s faith looks for prosperity(things to eat, wear and a shelter), but the faith of the son seeks posterity(a life that outlast this earth). Faith has a beginning and an end, so we see scripture saying “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;….” Heb.12:2, “Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.” 1 Pet. 1:9.
Abound in Utterance
Utterance relates to how we speak of the faith and about our faith. It funny that many of us cannot expressly defend our faith, not because we do not believe, but it’s because we’ve not learnt to grow in our faith. Many just play the church and are not careful to learn more about our life in Christ. Peter says it like this, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” 1 Pet. 3:15.
Abound in Knowledge.
The average christian knows more about church, than he/she know about the faith. They know more about their environment more than they know about their faith. Politics and sports seems more appealing to learn of than to learn about our place in eternity. The church is not just a place to pray and get things done for us. We were not saved to be things seeker. The essence of salvation is to bring us into rest. To bring us into Christ and Christ will bring us into the Kingdom. So, Jesus says to us “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matt.11:28-29.
Abound in all Diligence
Diligence here relate to how dedicated we are to seeking God. It relates to how much are ready to give up to get God, how much energy we put in to following the Lord. Becoming a medical doctor requires a lot of dedicated study and learning. Diligence is a major criteria to becoming that which God has destined us to be. There is a reason for our salvation, ending up and entering into that reason requires great diligence. Paul says it like this, “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 3:12-14.
Abound in Love
We are also expected to grow in love. Love is not definite or limited. Love is unending and eternal. Just as you cannot come to the end of learning God, so also you cannot come to the end of love. All will end except love. So, God desires that we grow in love, to our neighbours, to the saints, to the government, to our enemies and to all. We are also expected to grow in love to God. Rom. 12:9-11 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
Abound in Grace.
One of the most profound prayers of the Apostles to believer is that grace be multiplied to all through the knowledge of the Lord. It’s very important that we grow in the grace of our Lord Jesus. Grace is first an endorsement and a tool to stop the flow and advancement of sin. We need to grow in grace. To grow in grace is to advance in the operation of grace. Grace is like a mansion where we are expected to climb up. The more we grow, the easier it is to live above sin. No man can leave above sin except he grows in grace. Scripture says to us that as sin abound, grace will abound much more. Peter advises us saying, 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 2 Pet.3:18.
The Lord will make us abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. Amen.
