Rom.8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope.

It’s amazing to realise that the whole creature was made subject to vanity. To be subject to vanity simply means to be under the control of vanity. The natural man is a seeker of vanity. Vanity relates to things that amount to nothing. They at times appear good, but ends up as nothing meaningful. Scripture therefore tells us that ‘creature was made subject to vanity,….’

Solomon was a lab test to see how man can seek vanity. He was given and devoted to pleasure. He sought to have all the comforts the world promises, yet in all, it amounted to VANITY. At the end of his life, having enjoyed all that is to be enjoyed, having tasted almost all the foods on the face of the earth, having enjoyed the pleasure between a man and a woman unto ‘eternal’ perfect number(1000), having lived in mansions second to none, he summed up everything in what looks like a lamentation and said, all is vanity upon vanity. He was a perfect reference for vanity seeking. Anytime your soul wants to lay hold on seeking earthly pleasures, just look unto Solomon.

Subjected in Hope.
In all these, we realise the intention of God was to subject man in Hope. Hope is somewhat important for living. Any man without hope is not guaranteed to live another seconds. Live is built in Hope. So, God subjects all men to the consolation of Hope. Anyone who lives in Hope, lives. But that hope was a vain hope. Man seeking a hope that will amount to nothing. Hence, the whole of man’s activity is built around seeking something that will not outlast life. Man is devoted to seeking after honours, titles, achievements, successes and so on that cannot and will not outlast this earth. Paul calls it a life of misery. 1 Cor. 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Eternal Hope…
God has called us out of this vain hope which makes the life of men miserable and has called us into an eternal hope. A Hope that can and will outlive this earth. Our Hope is in Christ, the one who created a path for us to come back to our Father. He is our Hope. Col. 1:27 “… which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:”
We were not saved to seek the same thing the gentiles seek. We were not delivered to be subject to the same hope every other person is subject to. We were not saved to be a seeker of vain things like the people still under the subjection of vanity. God has saved us so we could have an eternal hope in Him. And please note, eternity is not just long years, it also is a better quality of life. It is living the life of God. It is living like Christ anywhere anytime. Col.3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Seek eternal Hope. Let your heart rest in the hope of His calling that you may experience the riches of the glory of His inheritance. Grace will keep you. God bless you.
