Titus 3:4-5 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;.
The just reward for sin is death. The recompense of evil is punishment and death. Man fell into a life of sin, bound by the powers death. Man was bound in sin and also entitled to the consequences of sin which is death not necessarily because he has committed any sin after the order of Adam but because he was born after the order of Adam. So, no matter the good deeds of man, he was and is born under the dominion of sin and death. So, the best of man outside the redemptive life of Christ is a sinner. You are a sinner not because you commit sin, but because of the nature of sin inherent in you.” And so, all have sinned(past tense) and have come short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23.
Now, let me share the good news with you. All have been paid for. Your sins have been fully paid for. Somehow, this is the most controversial aspect of the Christian believe where all actually believes that by the sin of Adam, all was made a sinner, but it’s hard to believe that by the righteousness of Jesus, all were made righteous. You didn’t need to accept Adam’s life to become a sinner, all you needed was to the nature of Adam. Although, you need to receive Christ, all you need to become righteous is the life and the nature of Christ. Rom. 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
The Kindness and love of God…
Without mercy, there can never be salvation. While we were yet sinners, it was interesting to know that God loved us and desires that we come into repentance and walk thereby in His ways, yet we come to a point in our walk that we start to feel God is good to us because we are good to Him or that God loves us because we love Him. Our love for Him is just a response to His ever present, unending love and there is no how we can measure up with His love. That mercy and love delivered us from the path of destruction and is STILL AT WORK IN US to deliver us from further slipping away. I wouldn’t believe Jesus went through all that to save us and abandon us. We are a work in progress. He is constantly and consistently at work in us to perfect us in salvation. All He expects from us at every point in time is obedience to His life and teachings. He shows us a pattern and encourages us to take a step. When we walk with Him, we may at times want to sink like Peter, but He holds us up when we call on Him. The only problem is,many condemn themselves more. God never condemns. He doesn’t like sin, but always will to save the sinner.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done…
This is another controversial point in our believe system. The works of righteousness does not make you righteous, rather it can only show how much you’ve been with and in the righteous one. Many engage in the works of righteousness at the expense of the Righteous one. They neglect Jesus, the righteous one and they try to be righteous by works. Just as you are not an American because you speak the American accent or just because you reside in America. You are an American because you are citizen of America whether by birth or by Adoption(Nationalisation) or by honorary method. So also, you are righteous not because you perform the works of righteousness but because God declares you righteous whether by birth or adoption….
Romans 8:15-16 “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”
…but according to his mercy he saved us…
Mercy only was responsible for all. If not for God’s mercy, all men were marked for death and destruction. But mercy came/appeared and brought man into repentance and salvation. That mercy didn’t stop when you received Christ, it also continues even when you falter on the way. When you look at the boisterous wind around you, and you begin to sink, when you call on Jesus, He will save you always. It doesn’t matter how many times(although it is not a license to continue in the sinful life), when you call on Jesus, He responds. And He expects you to learn and grow by that experience. Peter was a man of many fault, yet Jesus was will to commit the ministry of reconciliation to Him. He said to him, “feed my sheep”. All He wants from you is “do you love me(Jesus).” Once you love Him in return for His love, He is committed to saving you.
Saving you “by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
He is saving us by washing us. Note, washing is in continuous tense. The act of washing isn’t a one time event as believed but a continuous process of cleansing. God is committed to saving us by washing us on a continuous basis. His washing regenerates us. To regenerate means to ‘continue to create new genes.’ ‘To keep planting new lives by removing the old paled ones.’ This is what God is doing. He is working on us daily by removing the old life in us and planting a new one.
Also, another way He’s saving us by renewing the Holy Ghost in us. That seems strange. Can the Holy Ghost be renewed in us. Yes. To renew there talks about to refresh or to revitalise. It also means to rekindle or to reinvigorate. We all need to be re-fired up in the Holy Ghost day by day. To grow in Holy Ghost. To become more responsive to the life of the spirit. Once we are not growing in the Holy Ghost, we will become religiously tied to the yesteryears… The Spirit of God is constantly speaking but many are locked and bound in the things He said afore. The problem of many is they can’t seem to grow in understanding the Spirit of God. They hold on to what He said at the expense of what He is saying. If we do not get renewed in the Holy Ghost, then we will soon be overtaken in corruption. Hence, the Lord wants to renew us in the Holy Ghost on a consistent basis. The Apostles and the early church gathered day by day to pray and commune together and they are always be filled with the Holy Ghost. That’s the expectation of God, not just to be filled with the Holy Ghost but to also be FULL of the Holy Ghost. We must grow to the expected stature of Christ who was full of the spirit.
In conclusion, we were not saved by the works of righteousness but by the mercy of God. And God is always at work to save us by washing us and renewal in the Holy Ghost. God bless you.
