2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

One of the most important activities in the life of a believer is diligent study of the word of God. As new born babes, we are admonished to ‘desire the sincere milk of the word of God’. Our quest for not just growth but also survival should create a hunger in us both to hear and to read the word of God without ceasing and season. We need to consume in large chunks the word of God because our lives depend on it. Jesus in answering the devil in His temptation said, ‘man shall not live by bread alone but by every word the proceeds out of the mouth of God.’

Study to show yourself approved unto God.
Many have misinterpreted this scripture and many still do, but there is a positive to it, diligent study of the word helps you to understand the word. Your approval is not unto men. Many have studied to make themselves approved unto man. We need to study not because we want to please men or have good points to generate arguments, but that God can approve of us as diligent workman. God cannot commit His resources to a lazy fella. God cannot commit His word to one who cannot give himself to diligence. God wants us to press on and hard into studying not because we want to preach it, but because we want to know God. The problem comes when why we study is to be able to preach it and to prove a point that we know our bible. A lot of errors will fly in. Just a sincere love to know God will necessitate our love for reading His word and this won’t be by compulsion but love. And when love generates our hunger and thirst for the word of God, we will be filled.

Rightly dividing the word of truth.
I have had to ask God many times, what does it mean to rightly divide the word of truth? Many engage in arguments, trying to prove another wrong, trying to show how right they are and they sincerely believe that’s how to divide the word of truth. No. That’s why the next verse says, “But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.” 2Tim.2:16.
To rightly divide the word of truth is to come into accuracy of judgement. To know what to say according to the word of God per time. Jesus asnwered the devil in three ways using different scriptures, He was accurate. He wasn’t debating with the devil but He rightly divided the word of truth.
To rightly divide the word of truth is to speak accurately the mind of God concerning a matter. To efficiently and effectively pass of the word of truth without bias and prejudice, and that word is able to break any opposition. In rightly dividing the word, we bring the word of God exalted above our cultures and traditions, ways of men, societal beliefs, doctrines built by legal systems and make-beleive. We simply exalt the word(the proceeding word of God).

In conclusion, God desires that we study His word so that we can become approved of Him. He wants to see our sincere hunger for to know, not just to preach or teach, but to know His word and to learn more of Him. Love and faith is essential in studying so that we will not be like the Pharisees who love to study just to oppress others with what they seem to know and they gather daily to debate on their knowledge. Let’s be like the Apostles who submit one to another in humility, meekness and lowliness of heart. Our approval is not of men but of God, so that God can minister through us and we will rightly divide the word of truth. God bless you. Amen.
