It is no news that Jesus promised to give us another comforter like Him, the Holy Spirit who should teach us Christ for when He comes, Jesus said, “he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. ” (John 16:12-15).
Unfortunately, many christains have not come to know the Holy Spirit as they ought to. We’ve depended so much on our personal study to learn about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom. But by strength(works) shall no man prevail. No matter how much we like to study the Bible or read journals or books that talks about God, without the help of the Holy Spirit, we will just be locked in the realm of religion and doctrinal believe. The one that introduced the Father to us is Jesus Christ and He also introduced us to the Father by reconciling man back to the Father and breaking the middle wall of partition between us, He is our common ground as believers. Yet, there is one that is able to teach us the Father, His Christ and the Kingdom, He is the Holy Spirit.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:” (John 16:13).
It is amazing however how we in these times make the mistake of the Pharisees who believe that they could know God by becoming scholars of the scripture, searching the Scripture and neglecting the Spirit of God who is able to bring us to the Father. “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. ” (John 5:39-40).
The essense of the Holy Spirit therefore cannot be over emphasised. We all need the baptism, the in-filling of the Holy Ghost. For without this baptism, we cannot enter into the kingdom. Jesus declared with so much authority that “except a man be born of ‘water’ and ‘the Spirit’,he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Many have chosen to stay at ‘except a man be ‘born again’,he cannot see the kingdom.’ It therefore becomes important that we ask this question. What is the main agenda of God’s redemptive plan for man? Is it just for man to see the kingdom and not gain entrance? No. God wants man to be a partaker of the Kingdom. Infact, His intention is for man to inherit the Kingdom. He called us Joint-heirs with Jesus. A co-inheritor with Christ. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Romans 8:16-17).
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Therefore, we need to be born of the word of God(typified by water) and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus warned His disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they will be endued with power from on high after which they will now become a true witness of Him around the world. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ” (Acts 1:8). It means therefore that without the baptism of the Spirit, one cannot be a witness of Jesus Christ. Without the Holy spirit, we will just be preachers of letters which kills for “Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” (2 Corinthians 3:6).
We must as a matter of importance seek the baptism of the Holy ghost for that is even the ernest/token of our inheritance. It is a surety/guarantee of our inheritance. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”(Ephesians 1:13-14).
The bible even told us that we do not know how to pray but the Holy spirit helps us to make intercession with groanings that cannot be altered. We need the Holy Ghost more than we even need oxygen. Infact, the oxygen of a believer is the Holy Ghost without which a believer dies.
Three foundations upon which the Christain faith is built upon are:
1. The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. The Love of God. and
3. The Communion(fellowship) of the Holy Ghost.
These are subjects for another time.
The Bible talks about the fruit of the spirit which is the only way to distiguish between they that are the disciples of Christ and the ordinary followers and unbelievers alike. Funnily, when what we seek and pray for is the same thing with what the unbelievers seek and pray for, then it means we are lagging behing in the agenda of sonship.
Can I ask this fundamental question? Can one have the fruit when you do not have the seed? No. Except we have the spirit we cannot manifest the fruit. The fruit of the spirit are not physical qualities that can be learnt, they are generated and developed in the spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23).
As a believer, you need to be baptised in the Holy Ghost. You need to be a witness of Jesus. John the baptist gave us an insight into Jesus’ ministry. “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:” (Matthew 3:11). Jesus also added to that when He reminded us saying, “For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. ” (Acts 1:5).
Let me at this point remind you of the three kind of baptism that the scripture told us of.
1. Baptism of repentance: this is also known as baptism of John. It is a baptism of repenting from sin. It is a continuous activity. You come all the time to be baptised afresh. This kind of baptism cannot guarantee a glorious life in Christ. Infact, this baptism existed before Jesus. It is a baptism that needed be repeated as a substitute for killing of goats, ram or even lamb for atonements of sins. That’s not where God wants us to dwell. He wants more for man than to repent today, repent tomorrow, and keep repenting all through one’s lifetime. This baptism does not guarantee victory over sin. It only locks us up in the realm of religion. Religion is not God’s intention. Christainity is not a religion, it is a life. God’s life to be lived on earth so as to have guarantee over sin. Victory over sin is not about rising and falling to sin. It is not just aboout forginess of sin. It is actually taking away the nature or seed of sin, hence, being born of an incorruptible seed of God. Matt. 3:6-16,Mark 1:4-9. 1 Pet.1:23.
2. Baptism into Christ. This is a baptism into newness of life, into the death and ressurection of Jesus Christ. “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” (Romans 6:3).
“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” (Galatians 3:27).
This baptism initiates us into the life of Jesus Christ. We become new creature for old things are passed away. We are not repaired or refurblished, we are re-created, created anew, a new creature that never existed before. We are therefore born after the order of The Christ who is without sin and not after theorder of the first Adam, inheriting the nature of sin. We have a right of way to leave like Jesus lived. We therefore become born again, not to corruptible but to incorrutible. So, the scripture says, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” (1 John 3:9). This is the live that guarantees victory over sin. “For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:10-11). This is only possible in Christ Jesus. “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4).
3. Baptism of the Holy Ghost. This is very essential for us as believers. We need to be baptised in the holy ghost. We need to desire this. This is the promise of the father even in the old testament when Joel prophesied it by the spirit. It began to happen in Acts 2. It is an in-filling, in-dwelling of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost therefore lives in us, instructing us in the way of the Lord, leading us through the path of righteousness on a daily basis, tutoring us and guiding us into all compactments of truth, and altogether bringing us into divine union with The Father and His Christ. No man can enter the Kingdom except by the leading of the Holy Ghost. The kingdom is designed for sons to inherit. Remember, the feast of the Kingdomm is prepared for sons. And how do we become sons? It is by following the leadings of the Spirit. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” (Romans 8:14). Our believe affords us the privilege to become the sons of God, but we will not become until we learn to obey the leadings of the spirit, and conciously follow the spirit wheresoever He goes. God has called us to fellowship.
The last two baptism are very essential for us. Much words cannot convince but I trust the spirit to expand it more in your heart. God bless you.
