“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2).
One of the greatest motivating factor for endurance in life is joy. One can go all the way to the end of anything in as much as one derives joy from doing that thing. And that is why many get frustrated with their job, business, school, friends, society and the like, because they do not derive joy from such association. Whatsoever doesn’t bring joy brings frustration and then weariness sets in.
Jesus endured all the contradictions of sufferings because of the joy set before Him. He was able to withstand the shame by despising it. To despise means to count it unworthy of sufficient attention. The devil always wants to get our attention focused on the wrong things, and by so doing, our joy becomes drained away. He likes to inflict pain in whatsoever form, so that we shift our focus to the pain rather than the one who can take away the pain. He uses everyone around us to attack our joy so that we can remove our concentration from God, in whose presence we have the fulness of joy, to the seeming circumstance around us, thereby losing our joy.
And that’s why the scripture started by saying “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2).
We must not remove our gaze from Jesus. He must be resolute at looking unto Him. We must ‘abide’ in His presence and not be ‘lured’ away or deceived away from His presence. The devil tries to sell a lie to us that God hates us by throwing every wrong circumstance at us, but God inspite of whatsoever situation is love, so He loves us unconditionally. Even when you seem to commit sin(I’m not talking of a perpetual sinner), God still loves you. We have an advocate who speaks for our salvation, 1John 2:1. The knowledge and acceptance of God’s love brings joy.
May the joy of God’s love feel your heart. God bless you.
